As of 2020, total 65 universities are approved by university grant commission. In the state, universities can be categorized in four categories as listed below:
- Central university
- State university
- Deemed university
- State private university
From these universities, there are numerous colleges that are affiliated. If we count all colleges then total number would cross thousand. Out of these, not all colleges are good enough to cater quality education. Central and state funded institutions are considered always good because of their fund and better infra.
As of now, there is only one Central university operational in Karnataka. This university is based at Gulbarga, Karnataka. In entire Karnataka, 31 universities are funded by state government.
